A Family-Run Farmstead Made For Gathering
Newhall Mains is a careful reinvention of the traditional ‘mains’ — the Scottish name historically given to the principal buildings of a farm or working estate. Founded in 2020 by Euan Ramsay and his family, the 18th-century property which, before works began, was classified ‘at risk’, has been lovingly restored into a clutch of luxury self-catering cottages. Designed by London-based Kelling Designs and refurbished by an extensive team of Highland-based craftspeople, Newhall Mains is the ideal retreat for families and friends, adventurers or those simply looking for a quieter pace of life.
Once derelict, Newhall Mains has been brought carefully back to life, its stone, lime render, lead and slate restored using traditional materials and techniques. Inside, the old quadrangular farmstead has been given a more colourful second act: hand-painted bathrooms, patterned headboards, bespoke furniture and richly layered fabrics sit within centuries-old walls, with underfloor heating and generous en suites adding the comforts you’ll be glad of after a day outside.
No two cottages are quite alike, but each shares the same playful take on Highland style. And there’s plenty beyond the front door: the Black Isle’s coastline, countryside and villages are close at hand, with the wider Highlands within striking distance.
